Attending an English Summer School is a great opportunity for international school-age students to improve their English, meet other students from around the world and immerse themselves in another culture.
But not all schools are the same. While cost can be a major factor when deciding, there is a lot more to consider. You want to make sure it is right for you and offers a great experience with quality results.
There are important questions to ask and different options to consider. Our multi-national summer school in Brighton provides a range of learning and activities for two age groups Juniors: 10-12 and Seniors: 13-17.
The UK is a popular choice as an English-speaking destination to study on a summer course. But with so many schools to choose from, how do you decide which is the best option?
Maybe there is a specific area you always wanted to see. Maybe there are sights and attractions that influence your choice. Think about if you want to be near a city, in the countryside or a cosy town. And whether there will be different places to visit.
You also want to find out about the travel arrangements between locations. And are these costs included in the price?
Our school is located in Shoreham-By-Sea, a very safe area just outside Brighton, on the south coast of England. The weather is usually pleasant and warm during the summer. It is very close to the seaside, and students will enjoy time spent at the beach during their stay.
During the course, students are taken to see many interesting and fun locations in nearby cities and towns. Students are provided with weekly bus passes and train tickets for excursion days are also included in the price. Everything is easily accessible for the planned excursions that students will be accompanied on.
Where do you want to be lodged? Summer boarding schools in the UK will have dormitory style accommodation, so students stay in shared rooms in groups.
Others have homestay accommodation where the students stay with host families, either in their own room or sharing with a small number of students. If you choose this option, you may need to consider the distance the students will be travelling to the school and home.
We provide comfortable homestay accommodation with British families, who have experience of hosting international students. They will take meals with the students and spend free time with them. Students are made to feel at home, and are treated as part of the family.
We also always try to place students as near to the school as possible, especially the younger students.
Are meals included in the cost of the course and what is provided?
In a dormitory, students will likely be given meals cooked and served for large numbers in a cafeteria or lunchroom with options to choose from.
In a homestay the student will be provided with home cooked meals where they eat with their host family. They might even be taken out to a local restaurant.
Our summer school package includes three meals per day for every student, breakfast and dinner with their host family and a packed lunch to take with them and eat after their morning lessons and before the afternoon’s activities.
Besides a full programme of English lessons, you may want to know what other experiences and activities are planned.
Are you into adventure sports and physical activities? Are you interested in sightseeing and museums, or cultural or historical learning? Or maybe you like games and interesting or creative workshops.
Find a school that caters for your interests and things you enjoy but also think about trying new things and being adventurous. Many schools cater for a range of interests.
It is also important to note the variety of activities from week to week. If you are staying for more than one week, you don’t want to be doing the same activities again.
On our summer school programs, we have full day excursions to London. Students get to see many of the iconic sights, museums and experiences the city and its boroughs has to offer. We include a mix of cultural and historical activities as well as a range of interesting and fun outings, workshops, quizzes and competitions.
All activities are applicable to the two different age groups, with different activities to ensure students on longer courses enjoy a variety of experiences.
And everything is supervised by our experienced and friendly activity leaders in small groups of 1 leader per 10 students. The activity leaders know the activities and locations very well. They have been carefully chosen for their uplifting and positive nature, motivated to make sure you have the best experience.
All activities are also carefully planned to promote actively using English in real life, so students get to practice their English and retain what they have learned through the classroom lessons.
Who students are boarding and spending the day with will affect the level of English practice. If students are in a group, travelling and staying with friends or students of the same nationality, they will be less likely to speak English when they socialise.
If students are placed in accommodation and take part in activities with students of a different nationality, this increases the opportunities to practice English.
At our school, we are all about full immersion, with all activities planned to maximise English learning through fun and interaction.
If your host family takes more than one student, you will be staying with students of other nationalities, encouraging you to continue communicating in English and so keep practicing.
We also pair up our students during the day’s activities with students from other nationalities, which further encourages interaction in English.
What is required of the student for the summer course? Will you need to purchase books and materials beforehand? This will add extra costs.
Or does the course provide learning materials included in the price? Not only does this keep costs down, but means the student will not have to pack and carry books when they travel or to and from their lessons.
And finally, you want to think about how often the course content is updated. This is especially relevant if you plan to attend the summer school again in later years.
At the Brighton summer school, we provide customised printed course materials for each student, annually updated to make sure we are giving the best learning experience.
What is covered during the lessons? What areas of learning are important to you? Some schools may focus heavily on all areas including reading, writing and grammar. While others centre their lessons to enhance speaking and listening while immersed and surrounded by native English speech.
How much time is spent on classroom lessons? Some school courses provide excursions and activities only as an extra, with the option to focus only on lessons. Others include everything as standard, focused on offering a good balance of lessons, activities and excursions to provide an enjoyable learning experience.
At Brighton, the English lessons focus mainly on conversations, listening and pronunciation designed to build confidence with speaking. There is a small amount of grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing. We aim for the lessons to be engaging and fun and incorporate British culture and project work.
There are 4 hours of classroom lessons per day, 4 days a week. Students are put into groups according to their ability so they will not struggle or get bored. We have small class sizes to give excellent focus and attention.
In the end, it is important to find the right fit for you. You want the experience that suits you best and provides you with good productivity, comfort and enjoyment.
But don’t be afraid to challenge yourself, to try new things. This can be very beneficial. After all, you have decided to take a summer English course to improve yourself, so take every opportunity to do so.
Also, try not to get swayed by where your friends are going. It is often helpful when you are out of your comfort zone. You will be more likely to make friends from other nationalities and this is a wonderful experience that opens you up to other cultures.
Our summer school courses are carefully planned and structured to make real improvements in your English skills to take with you back to your studies and forward in life. And to give you an unforgettable summer experience of fun and adventure with focused care and attention.
We hope to see you on our next summer course!
