Introducing a new High School in Cape Town

I had a very pleasant meeting with the principal, Ms. Wendy Horn, at the Protea Heights Academy,

Ms. Horn was a former teacher of Settlers High School and are experienced in the know-how’s of visiting international students. She is impressed that ELH has a dedicated coordinator for each of our regions, here in South Africa. She asked who would be responsible for the students ☺. She then asked about our policy regarding “trouble makers” as she is pretty confident that “we will get them” ☺. I replied that if the student was well informed about the rules and regulations by both school and hosts, they will get one warning – if there’s no improvement, then back home! She then remarked that we’re of the same mindset and she then agreed to take students. She is prepared to take up to three students at a time – Grades 9-10.

I asked about hosts and she is pretty confident that if the Van Tonders can host a student, that by word of mouth other parents will soon follow suit. The Van Tonders family are already one of our host families. The parents of the school are apparently quite conservative, being protective and caring about their children’s academics and welfare. A good environment for the students to be in.

It is a new school, 3 years old, spacious, multicoloured, with young vibrant teachers. The school is absolutely focused on academic achievements, especially on science, Maths and IT. Ms. Horn wants it to be the top technology school in the region/Western Cape. Students who are interested in the arts will not benefit going to this school. Science and maths are compulsory subjects. They have a huge IT center where their grade 10’s are already doing programming.

Science excursions are often undertaken and the learners go on international tours to visit countries especially for their science and math contributions. She would love to build relationships with international students, for when they as a school visit other countries, that they then might have some contact person in that country. She is however more optimistic about the exposure local students have when international students visit.

She is impressed that ELH has a dedicated coordinator for each of our regions, here in South Africa.

Mrs.Mimmie Du Toit, Local Co-Ordinator

I think this is an excellent school, environment and a principal who has vision. Hope we get plenty selective applications for this school.  They are ready and waiting!
