1. Windsor Castle

You probably know it as the home of the Queen, but Windsor Castle has also been home to 39 other monarchs before her. It is located in the county of Berkshire, about a 45 minute drive west of London. Spend a day in this historical palace and go on a guided tour to see the Grand Reception Room, state apartments, and St. George’s Chapel. Choose a day to visit when you can witness the changing of the guards. Of course, because the queen often spends her weekends here, there are special apartments that are just for her and her family that come with a strict privacy policy and are not for the public eye to see. 

2. Harry Potter Studio

Another popular tourist attraction is the birth place of the blockbuster movie based on the JK Rowling novel that sold over 300 million copies. Visit the studio 20 miles north-west of London and see sets, props, and costumes of all of the Harry Potter movies. Step into Diagon Alley or the Great Hall and get up close with original props and authentic costumes used in the film.

3. Canterbury Cathedral

This beautifully detailed church has been around for thousands of years and is still a running working parish. Take a one-day trip to tour the facilities or attend one of their various mass services. You can also visit the library that holds an enormous archive of ancient manuscripts, photographs, and books.

4. Alton Towers Theme Park

If you’re seeking rollercoasters, water rides, mini golf, and great carnival food, then you will love this theme park that is part of the Peak District National Park. Also, visit the historical towers which were once the site of a military training camp.

5. Blenheim Palace

This palace and its vast property is a World Heritage Site and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. You may want to grab a site map before you visit here so that you don’t get lost. There are many things to do here, so your day will certainly be filled with activities. Take a tour of the massive palace, visit one of the many manicured gardens, and witness the large manmade lake that surrounds the palace.

6. City of London

Visit the iconic city for the day and see Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the Tower Bridge, and the Buckingham Palace. If you want to explore the city on your own schedule, take a day trip to high street where all of the best shopping and restaurants in the city are located. Go on themed day tours to see the ins and outs of the castle. Witness the falcon displays or take a walk through the gardens.

8. Stratford-upon-Avon

Explore the home of Shakespeare and walk through 800-year-old buildings that were standing back when the great playwright was alive and well.  There are plenty of shops, restaurants, accommodations, and attractions to fill up your day. Discover one of the few remaining preserved homes, the Harvard House, that was built in 1596.
